Devon holidays - just perfect for a break at any time of the year
Devon is one of the largest counties in England, and offers an almost endless list of attractions for the visitor. Both the north and south coasts offer clean, beautiful sandy beaches as well as spectacular scenery and wonderful walks in the bracing air. There are popular resorts, picturesque fishing ports and quiet little villages dotted along the coastline. In the north the Atlantic facing coast is a favourite of surfers, whilst in the south generations of watersports enthusiasts have found sailing and diving nirvana in places such as Salcombe and Dartmouth.
Inland there are unspoiled villages with fine old churches and a historical record that ranges from the traces of ancient civilisations to modern industrial heritage. To crown it all Devon possesses, not just one but two national parks - Dartmoor and Exmoor. The landscape of Dartmoor is spectacular with tall granite "tors" standing out on top of the high plateaus that are split by the valley of the River Dart. Here the famous Dartmoor ponies still graze. Dartmoor is also blessed with an abundance of prehistoric remains with standing stones, hut circles and hill forts sprinkled across the landscape. Exmoor is rather less rugged and wild and offers some of the most varied and beautiful scenery in England. There are thickly wooded valleys, heather-covered uplands, steep coombes, wild ponies and red deer, and beautiful, picturesqe villages.
In South Devon the towns of Torquay, Paignton, and the fishing port of Brixham make up Torbay - otherwise known as the English Riviera. This expression certainly sounds glamorous. But is it justified? Well the dictionary's definition of "riviera" goes:
A narrow coastal region between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea extending from southeast France to northwest Italy. The Riviera, known as the Côte d'Azur in France, is a popular resort area noted for its flowers grown for use in perfumery.
Yet in our imagination we associate the word "riviera" with a seaside location having a warm, sunny climate, exotic plants and a night life to die for. And Torbay certainly fits that description. Because the area is backed by steep hills a suntrap is created which results in a micro-climate that is warmer than the rest of the country. Torquay faces south, and with such a sunny aspect the town has long had a reputation as a health resort. The Mediterranean feel of Torbay is further enhanced by Paignton's characteristic red sandstone. And then you have the Torbay waterfront which, with its marinas, wine-bars, restaurants, night clubs and theatre, would stand comparison with any international resort.
